Welcome to the Magical World of Aromatic Oils

Welcome to the Magical World of Aromatic Oils

Ancient practices are increasingly being incorporated into modern life. Health problems are supported by traditional treatment as well as the treatment methods of modern medicine. Aromatherapy is one of these traditional methods…

Aromatherapy is derived from the words “aroma” meaning “fragrance” and “therapy” meaning treatment… The essence of the job is to naturally heal one’s mind, body and soul by using scented oils.

This method, which has been used for at least 6000 years by ancient civilizations such as Egypt, China and India, is still applied as a complementary treatment almost all over the world today.

Fragrances have such an important place in our lives that they sometimes remind us of a person, sometimes of an event, sometimes of a moment… While essential oils arouse different feelings with their unique characteristic scents, they invite us to their magical and healing world.

Let’s share with you a good information we learned in a lesson of the very dear Vedat Ozan:
The branches reach a point in the brain adjacent to where memories are stored. In other words, when you first sense a smell, the state you are in at that moment and that smell are almost locked to each other and written to the brain. Whenever you smell the same scent afterwards, you feel as if you are back to that first moment.
We are sure many of you have experienced this situation.

The source of essential oils is medicinal plants

In aromatherapy; essential oils extracted from the flowers, leaves, stems, fruits and roots of plants and also obtained from resins are used. Distillation is the most widely used method of obtaining essential oils. It provides a pure separation of the oil. The essential oil is entrained by the water vapor, thereby separating it from other non-volatile compounds. Essential oils are known for their characteristic, often quite pleasant smell, and are also called “essential” or “ether oil” because of their oil-like appearance. These oils contain saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, alcohol, aldehydes, esters, ethers, ketones, oxide phenols and terpenes. We can also say that the smell we perceive when we smell a rose or lily is due to the essential oils they contain.

When essential oils are dropped onto absorbent paper and left exposed, most of them evaporate and disappear without leaving any traces.

The main purpose of existence of these essences found in plants; It is to prevent water loss by evaporation from plants, to attract insects like a magnet, to ensure successful pollination, and to protect plants against many pests such as herbivorous animals, microorganisms and fungi, especially insects. Especially since terpenes are poisonous, they have a deterrent effect on many plant-feeding mammals and insects. Therefore, they play an important role in plant defense.

Essential and fixed oils

We have mentioned that essential oils are obtained from aromatic plants and have volatile properties as well as their unique smell and taste… Fixed oils are mostly the storage material of plants and are obtained by crushing seeds, fruits or seeds of plants under pressure. Oils such as olive oil, coconut oil, sweet almond oil are fixed oils and are used as carriers to dilute essential oils… Let us remind you that the oils obtained by this method should be preferred since the cold-pressed method preserves the valuable substances in the oil…

The use of oils in aromatherapy

Essential oils are frequently used in skin and hair care products for cosmetic purposes, especially in the perfume industry… Therapeutic uses can take various forms. Essential oils can be dripped into the water and evaporated in a candle censer or diffuser to give scent to the environment, inhaled by dripping into hot water, added to the hot water in the bathtub to take a bath, or diluted in a carrier oil and applied to the body with massage.

Essential oils are rarely used internally because of their strong physiological effects, and this practice is the job of clinical aromatherapists.

When applied directly on the skin, they can cause allergies. Essential oils used for massage should be applied after diluting in fixed oil. Eye contact of essential oils should also be avoided…
